Alex de Vries is the founder of Digiconomist, an independent research firm which is primarily known for providing live data on the environmental impact of the Bitcoin network via the Bitcoin Energy Consumption Index. Alex has been doing research into the sustainability challenges of proof-of-work mining-based blockchains since late-2016 and he has authored several influential scientific articles such as Bitcoin’s Growing Energy Problem, Renewable Energy Will Not Solve Bitcoin’s Sustainability Problem and Bitcoin’s Growing E-waste Problem for high-impact academic journals such as Joule. His work has been featured by many of the world’s leading media outlets such as the BBC, Associated Press, Financial Times, New York Times, Reuters, Economist, Bloomberg and many others.
