Jan Kosmol has been working for the German Environment Agency (UBA) since 2009 in the thematic areas of resource efficiency, circular economy and sustainable materials management. In the last years he has increasingly focused his work on environmental issues of primary raw material supply, especially environmental aspects of raw material availability and criticality, environmental risk assessment of mining activities and sustainability standard schemes in the mining sector and raw material supply chains. In his position as a research and policy officer he is initiating, supervising and evaluating research projects and communicating the results to the general public, experts and decision makers. He is consulting the German Government in order to make contributions to government strategies such as the German Research Efficiency Programme and the German Raw Materials Strategy. Jan has an academic background in Environmental Engineering from the Technical University of Berlin, where he has been studying and working in the department for water pollution control.
