Description

Mr. Melero is an agricultural engineer from the University of Chile. Between 1985 and 1989 he was Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Agronomy of that University. He began his political career in the Federation of Students of the University of Chile between 1977 and 1978. Later, he was Vice President of the Youth Front of National Unity. Between 1985 and 1989 he was Mayor of Pudahuel commune. He has an extensive parliamentary career, since 1990 he was a Congressman for the following 7 consecutive Legislative Periods. In the Chamber of Deputies he has been a member of the permanent commissions of Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development, Finance, Labor and Social Security. He was second Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies between December 1992 and August 1993; and President of the Chamber of Deputies between March 2011 and March 2012. Since April 2021, he is Minister of Labour and Social Security of Chile He began his political career as vice-president of the students’ federation at the Universidad de Chile (FECECH) between 1977 and 1978. A few years later he became vice-president of the Frente Juvenil de Unidad Nacional (National Youth Unity Front) and was director of the Secretario Nacional de la Juventud (National Youth Secretariat). Between 1985 and 1989, Mr. Melero served as mayor of the municipality of Pudahuel in the Metropolitan Region. Patricio Melero has an extensive parliamentary track record, as he was a deputy during the legislative periods: 1990-1994, 1994-1998, 1998-2002, 2002-2006, 2006-2010, 2010-2014 and 2014-2018. He has been a member of standing committees on Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development, Treasury, Labor and Social Security within the Chamber of Deputies He served as second vice-president of the Chamber of Deputies between December 1992 and August 1993 and President of the Chamber of Deputies between March 2011 and March 2012. From 2003 to 2005, he was secretary-general of the political party Unión Demócrata Independiente (UDI) and was President of that same party from 2012 to 2014.
